Traumatic Brain Injury - TBI One of the major causes of death and disability, Traumatic Brain Injury can result from accident or violence. Whether blunt non-penetrating, or penetrating, the injury event sets off a cascade of chemical inflammatory reactions that result in progressive insult to the brain in the hours and days following the injury. These resulting reactions can lead to permanent tissue injury, so most of today's medical treatments are aimed at breaking the cascade of inflammation. Usually a TBI occurs after a significant enough injury results in a loss of consciousness. A traumatic brain injury can result in a host of cognitive, emotional, physical, and physiological dysfunctions. Shearing forces from an injury can cause tearing of nerve tracks in areas of the brain responsible for hormone regulation. Often overlooked the resulting hormone dys-regulation may remain subtle, yet problematic to the patient. More pronounced dysfunction in speech capability and ambulatory functioning often deflect notice on the subtle physiological changes that occur with disruption of neuro-hormone pathways.
