  RSD -  Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy

This syndrome is a Complex Regional Pain Syndrome that has no demonstrated nerve lesion.  It results in a chronic pain syndrome that covers an area or a limb.  Not much is known about how this occurs, but it usually follows a trauma to a limb, that results in a nerve sensitization that leads to an amplification of pain impulses at the level of the central nervous system, leading to highly disabling pain perception that has no demonstrable anatomically verifiable injury.  Predicting the occurrence of RSD is difficult.  It can occur from blunt trauma, but has also been noted to occur post surgically.  After onset, a nervous system reorganization occurs, and structural changes can result such as muscle atrophy, skin changes, and osteoporosis.  RSD can occur at any age, but is most prevalent in those over 40 years of age.  RSD is thought result from an unpredictable acute nerve inflammation that occurs secondary to trauma of a body region.
